About the Project
The aim of the STENEO project (The Social Dimension of New Energy Technologies in the Ostrava Metropolitan Area), run by the University of Ostrava, is to strengthen the region's resilience and readiness for the energy transition.
More about the project
Researchers will map the situation in a region with a high incidence of energy poverty and a strong dependence on coal, and propose solutions that include the most vulnerable groups of residents.
For researchers from the University of Ostrava and the participating research and applied institutions, the project — funded under the Jan Amos Komenský Operational Programme (OP JAK) — focuses primarily on finding and proposing efficient models for housing and energy consumption. They aim to study so-called Positive Energy Districts, i.e. model packages of innovations (both technical and social) for specific parts of a city. Based on collected data about residents, they will propose possible solutions for the transition to cleaner energy, with an emphasis on preventing energy poverty and on overall acceptability for residents.
The project brings together academic and applied partners, including the University of Ostrava, VSB – Technical University of Ostrava, the Global Change Research Institute of the Czech Academy of Sciences (CzechGlobe), CTP Invest and other entities. Its interdisciplinary approach includes analysing the social and psychological aspects of the energy transition, mapping the impacts on vulnerable groups, and developing innovative strategies for their adaptation.
Key areas of the project
- Research into the impacts of the energy transition at the regional and social level
- Support for education and awareness in the field of sustainable energy
- Collaboration with the public and private sectors on implementing innovations
- Use of advanced methods from geoinformatics and data analysis
STENEO contributes to creating long-term strategies for sustainable development and ensures the transfer of scientific findings into practice, with the goal of delivering effective and socially responsible energy solutions for the future.
